A Florida man who set up a fire in a vacant lot and left it burning to the ground in an attempt to make a quick buck pleaded guilty on Tuesday to a lesser crime of arson, including setting fires with intent to cause property damage.

Robert G. Anderson, 33, of Tampa, pleaded guilty to one count of arson and three counts of making a hoax.

Garrick County Assistant State Attorney David L. Williams said during Anderson's preliminary hearing that Anderson lit up a vacant lot in a vacant lot at the Woodall Community Center Saturday evening. He told federal authorities at the time that he hoped to sell the piece of property, but didn't realize he had set one of the structures on fire.

Authorities said they were there to serve Anderson's probation.

A fire had already broken out a few weeks ago when Anderson returned from a wedding and realized something wasn't right, Williams said. Anderson, who lives on the second floor, called 911 and alerted the police to the blaze after seeing a couple on the ground from the roof, Williams said.

The blaze was declared out about half an hour later and Anderson was arrested around 3:30 a.m., he said. He was charged with one count of causing property damage due to an act of arson.

Williams said Anderson is scheduled to be back in court on Feb. 20, according to NBC affiliate WPTV. He is expected to surrender to authorities Tuesday afternoon, Williams said.
